Busted. Marathon gone?

10 days until the marathon, and what should be a blissful taper full of well-trained confidence has turned into wondering if I’m going to be able to run.

This past Saturday I set out for a 14 mile long run to kick off the 2-week taper.  At about the 7 mile mark my right knee started bothering me.  Generally tight, and just a little ‘off’.  Not the IT Band type issues from before, but something different.  Over the next 3 miles the tightness got more pronounced, and a little past 10 miles pain set in below and beside my kneecap.  Gutted out the last 4 miles to get back to my car, but something was definitely wrong.  Rested, iced, and fretted for the next 3 days, skipping my run on Tuesday, and headed out Wednesday morning for 5 miles to see how it felt.  Unfortunately the answer was tight, sore, and painful.

Today it’s very sore, clicking more than usual, hurts below and beside the kneecap, and just generally crappy.

Not quite sure what this is going to mean.  Definitely not going to run Friday, skipping my Saturday run, and hoping to try it out Sunday to see what’s going on.  Lots of stretching, ice, ibuprofen and profanities in the meantime.  Looking like this marathon may be slipping away.  After all the IT Band and Plantar Fasciitis battles, I may be wiped out by a rogue kneecap.

FML.

  4. Oh no... I would think it might be time to call a sports doctor and get an answer so you know how to proceed. Hopefully he says just tells you to rest and ice. Best of luck!

  6. Awk!!! Ok, don't give up hope yet. I had a similar issue about 2 months ago and it was just the oddest thing - I went to the athletic trainer at school and she thought it was a Plica Band issue and about a week later, it mysteriously went away (still feel it from time to time but not excruciating). Hopefully it's something that's going to heal quickly!!!

  7. Don't give up yet - I had the same pain, soreness, stiffness except mine also began to feel funny behind the kneecap (like I had cotton balls stuffed in my knee). I found a chiropractor that did Active Release (ART) and in 2 days, I was fixed and ran my marathon a week later. I highly recommend you find an ART doc!!

  11. shit! hopefully it's just a twinge that will pass. at this point, rest as much as possible. you won't gain any added fitness during taper, so better to take it easy and ensure you get to that start line. hope it starts feeling better soon!

  12. :( I really hope lots of rest and icing will help!!!

  13. Hope it heals up quick. At least it's taper time and you can rest completely from running without losing a measurable amount of fitness, and hopefully be back at it for race day.

  14. Damn. Well don't call it just yet. See what happens on Sunday. Sometimes when you're coming off of peak training your body is just in a weak state. fingers crossed.

  18. Thank you all for the kind words and the encouragement. So nice to have a group of people that truly understand the situation, and the brutal mix of emotions I'm juggling. Keeping hope alive right now.

  20. Get one of those ugly knee straps that I have. Sounds like runners knee. My strap seems to keep the pressure/pain and clicking at bay.

  21. ART theraphy hurts like crazy but it also really works... might want to look into it!

  22. aww man, I have been through all kinds of knee issues. I swear by stretching, leg lifts and actually walking. So doing nothing lead to more tightness than letting the muscles loosen up with walking and I had at least a couple docs prescribe that. sure hope it works out!!

  23. Aw, dangit. I really hope you get it whipped into shape in the next few days.

  25. Damn! Is it worth it to go see someone about the knee? Hope your run Sunday is much better!

  26. Go and see someone! I had something very similar - in fact have had something very similar quite often - and my osteopath loosens up my quads and hams and it relieves my knee. Also one of those chopat straps helps.
