I have tremendous respect for hot weather, born from some bad/stupid experiences, but I am not afraid of the heat.
Raleigh jumped from temperate-Spring to surface-of-the-sun hot in the blink of an eye. We hit 94 today with swamp-like humidity, and I'm definitely not adjusted yet. My wife is out of town for a few days, so my early-morning run became an after-the-kids-are-at-school run, and the heat was wilting. It added about 30 seconds a mile to my usual non-pushing pace, and I was dragging by the end. Not really a complaint, more just an observation.
I like running in the heat. I like to sweat. I'll get acclimated, but for now the heat has me on the ropes. A worthy opponent, but I'll start gaining ground soon.
I felt a little tweak/twinge in my right hip after my 9-mile run on Sunday, so I actually listened to my body and skipped my run on Tuesday to let myself recover. A year ago that's something I never would have done. Despite what my wife and kids say, apparently I am able to learn something new. No hip issues in my run this morning. Sometimes being a better runner has nothing to do with what your Garmin tells you.

You can keep the heat in Raleigh!! I'm literally counting the days until winter!!! Love your tags.....yes, it is Africa hot in NC!!!!
ReplyDelete"Sometimes being a better runner has nothing to do with what your Garmin tells you." - Love it...and so true! Glad there were no hip issues today.
ReplyDeleteGood for you listening to your body!
ReplyDeleteI'm more of a cool weather fan myself, but good for you for not being afraid of the heat!
ReplyDeleteTwo weeks and the heat will seem like nothing! Smart move on paying attention to your body.
ReplyDeleteHot weather is the best weather to run naked in. jus' sayin'.
ReplyDeleteIt's hard to imagine heat right now when it's 40 degrees right now. But I'm sure it's going to do the same thing here. And way to go listening to your body and giving it a day off.
ReplyDeleteEven though I don't like to run in hot weather, we can still be friends.
ReplyDeleteIt has been a really cool spring so far here in Minnesota. Normally, we deal with heat and humidity too (and in a month we most assuredly will), but so far it's been downright awesome. Be careful running in 94 degree heat, at least until you get acclimated - if that's even possible! :)
ReplyDeleteyay for no hip pain!
ReplyDeleteI couldn't watch The Year Without a Santa Claus until I was 20. Heatmiser and Snowmiser scared the crap out of me.
We've had a few days of "instant" heat so far this year and those first few days are always tough because you just aren't adjusted yet. It definitely get easier after you've dealt with it a few days.
ReplyDeleteWe haven't even hit our high temps, and I'm edgy when it's 68. I ran in -14 in the winter and it was fine. Hang in there bud, and keep sharing your strategies.
ReplyDeleteGreat that you don't have the pain.
I also don't mind a little heat. It's the summer and it is inevitable. What makes it really awesome is that first fall race after the summer when you fly!
ReplyDeleteI don't mind heat either...I would just like a little more notice than what we got here in Michigan:)
ReplyDeleteI totally agree...listening to your body can often determine how smart one really is with their running and believe me, I've been pretty LAME at times. Good for you for taking the time to rest and recover. I'm doing the same tomorrow!
ReplyDeleteI love running in the heat as well. I like the way our weather progressively warms up and by September, we're in our hottest month...just as the fall marathons approach. Love it!
Stay cool and smart!
I hope your hip is happy now that you gave it some rest! Summer has come to Colordo, I'm pretty sure we missed spring!
ReplyDeleteI melted away the other day, and then tried to figure out what to do with my sweaty feet at the office after my lunch run ... heat is great if you have a way to cool down after!
ReplyDeleteWay to take a little break - I'm glad your hip pain didn't return! :0) This heat is a killer..I agree..yuck!
ReplyDeleteOkay, no wonder why you did your tempo run at night.
ReplyDeleteCheck out the big brain on Chris from NC. Looks like you are getting wise in your advanced years.
feel free to run ALL of my sweaty mcsweat-sweat runs for me this summer. :) BARF.
