Giveaway - Mizuno Running Shoes - Mezamashii Project

You’ve probably seen a few Mizuno Giveaway blog posts in the last few days.  Here’s another.  I was recently invited to be a founding member of Mizuno's Mezamashii Run Project.  Mizuno’s goal for the project (aside from marketing) is to help runners have a more brilliant run, hence the name Mezamashii, meaning "eye opening" or "brilliant" in Japanese. Harnessing the power of real-world experience and social media to spread the work about Mizuno and their products.

I was offered a free pair of their shoes to try, and I took them up on their offer.  This is no small step for me since I’ve been running in Asics Gel Nimbus for at least 6 years.  I went with the Mizuno Wave Creation 13.  I’ve only done one 10-mile run in the shoes, so I’m not yet ready to put together any sort of review.  My initial impressions are good.  They are decidedly more stiff out of the box than the Asics, but I don’t think that’s a bad thing.  Once I break them in and put them through their paces I’ll put a review together.

In addition to my free pair of shoes, they’ve given me another pair to give away to help another runner find their ‘brilliant’ run.  The offer from Mizuno expires fairly soon, so this will be a quick giveaway.  I’ll take entries through Noon Eastern on Thursday (7/12), and announce the winner Thursday afternoon.  There are multiple ways to enter, each earning an individual entry.  You must add an individual comment below for each way you enter … each comment equals and entry and one more chance to win:
  1. Follow this blog, or let me know that you already do (leave a comment)
  2. Add a comment below letting me know your current ‘go-to’ shoe, and how long you’ve run in that make/model – curious if others are as overly loyal as me
  3. Follow me on twitter - @EvolvingThruRun – or let me know you already do (leave a comment)
  4. Link to this Giveaway from your blog (leave a comment)
  5. Share with me @EvolvingThruRun and @MizunoUSA in a tweet saying why you want to give Mizunos a try (leave a comment)
  6. Like the LoveAllTennis page on Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/LoveAllTennis).  Unrelated to this post - this is a new company my wife is launching, and ‘Likes’ make her very happy (leave a comment)
Entries close Noon Eastern on Thursday (7/12) – Good Luck!!

OBX Marathon Results and Ryder/Gu Giveaway Winners

Full race recap to follow, hopefully later this week, but here are the important details.

Contrary to what most folks with any common sense would do, but I suspect in line with what most folks afflicted with a love of running would do, I took my busted knee, wrapped it as tightly as I could in a brace, and hobbled to the starting line for the marathon.

After much pain, much gel, much Accelerade, and many mental battles...

Official chip time of 3:54:22.65.  I like the looks of a finishing time that starts with a 3.

VERY happy with the result considering 2 weeks ago I was doubting if I'd be able to make it to the starting line.  Thanks to the many bloggers who passed along encouragement along the way, especially those over the last couple of weeks.  I thought of many of you when the going got very tough at the end.

I'm in a world of sore today.  Some normal sore, some injury sore, but the overlap is significant enough that I can't really isolate anything.  I'll give it a few days to settle down and then take inventory.  No pain, no gain.

Those who subject themselves to my blog on a regular basis know that one of the reasons I chose this marathon is that it starts about 2 miles from my parents' house, and my father, who has never done any sort of distance racing, trained to walk the half while I ran the full.  His target was to complete the half in under 4 hours, and he rocked a 3:36:59 chiptime.  4 hour times didn't stand a chance against the Stallman men on Sunday.

Now, for the real reason you tuned in today - the giveaway winners.  Ended up with 190 entries total, which included some great stories about fueling gone wrong, and fond stories of sunglasses from the past.  Courtesy of Random.org, here are the 2 winners (along with their comments) of the Ryders/Gu combo prizes:

Winner #1 (Canadian runner of 'Running Adventures'):

Winner #2 (Karen of 'Just me and my Running Shoes')

Thanks to all of you that entered.

Karen & Canadian Runner - please email me your addresses at cwstallman@gmail.com, and I'll get your prizes shipped out so you can put them into action.

Time to hit the Advil again.

OBX Marathon Go Time - Hurts So Good

The journey of a crapload of pain begins with the first step.

Bright and early Sunday morning I’ll set off on my second attempt at the noble pursuit of marathoning.  Weather looks good, gear looks good, execution on training plan looks good, knee looks bad.  Per the vast majority of advice, I have not run since Sunday.  Tuesday and Thursday I hit the gym for some light lifting and 30 minutes on the stationary bike at minimal resistance.  I’ve been icing 2-3x daily, putting a hurting on a monster bottle of Advil, doing my PT stretching every day, and rolling around on the foam roller whenever the spirit moves me.  I know this is going to hurt, but I’m pretty sure I can push through the hurt as long as I’m not doing any long-term damage.  Unfortunately I wouldn’t say I’m looking forward to this one as much as I’m looking forward to it being over.

I’m confident in my preparation, and confident in my fueling strategy.  The will is strong, but the confidence in the knee is shaky.  Not quite sure how this one is going to play out, but there’s only one way to find out.  I still want to come in under 4 hours.  We’ll see if want is enough.

If you haven’t already done so, be sure to enter my Ryders Eyewear / Gu giveaway.  Still taking entries until midnight Sunday (11/14).

Good luck to all that are lacing them up this weekend.

Run swiftly my friends.

Big Old Giveaway: Ryders Eyewear and Gu … Times Two

Crossed the 500 miles of training mark over the weekend, down to less than two weeks to marathon #2, so it seems like time to give some stuff away.  Thanks once again to my good friend Devon from Outside PR, we’re going to go BIG with this giveaway.

If you read my recent review of the Ryders Eyewear VTX Sunglasses, you know that I’m a big fan.  They’ll be crossing the line in the OBX just slightly behind my nose, but well ahead of my ears, unless I manage some sort of epic finish that they’ll be talking about for years.  As I mentioned in my review, I’m digging the red pair I’ve got, but have much love for the metallic white VTX frames…..

If you’ve read some of my earlier blog posts, you may recall the unfortunate incident of the Cliff Shot Blocks.  In a moment of weakness I opted to stray from my trusted Gu Chomps and try the Shot Bloks, and was rewarded with a mouth full of fail.  The grass was decidedly browner on the other side.  Gu and I have since made up, and I shall stray no more.  In fact, I’d like to teach the world to sing, in perfect harmony, I’d like to buy the world some Gu, and keep it company.  So that’s exactly what I’m going to do…..

The winner of today’s giveaway will score him/herself a shiny new pair of White Mettalic Ryders Eyewear VTX Sunglasses:

AND, a GU Performance Energy Sampler, which includes:

  • 9 GU Energy Gels - includes each flavor of the workhorse of endurance nutrition
  • 3 Roctane Gels - when you really need to dig deep on that long training run, ride or race
  • 2 Chomps Packets - mix things up a bit with this delicious and chewable form of energy
  • 2 GU Electrolyte Brew Packets - a great tasting, balanced electrolyte mix to improve hydration
  • 1 GU Recovery Brew Packet - use after workouts to recover faster and perform better the next time out

And looks a little something like this:

But wait….there’s more.  To really go big, I’m going to award TWO lucky winners with a Ryders/Gu combination pack to help kick up their workouts.  Somewhere out there Billy Mays is nodding approvingly.

Still the King

I’ll take entries up until midnight on 11/14, the day of the Outer Banks Marathon, and will walk gingerly to my computer on the 15th in an ibuprofen-induced haze to select the two lucky winners via Random.org.

You’ve got 6 different ways to enter, so leave a separate comment for each to serve as your virtual entries.  I hope the winners like these products as much as I do.  GOOD LUCK!!

How to Enter (6 entries possible – separate comment for each):
  1. Become a follower of my blog, or let me know that you already are a follower.  If my rapier-like wit has distracted you from joining the ranks of the followers, now’s the time to join the revolution.  Follow me to freedom.
  2. Link to this giveaway on your blog, and leave me a comment letting me know
  3. Like Gu Energy Labs on Facebook, and leave a comment letting me know
  4. Leave me a comment with your worst ‘fueling’ experience while training.  I’m still emotionally scarred from the cola Shot Bloks.  Oh the humanity.
  5. Follow Ryders Eyewear on Facebook, and leave a comment letting me know
  6. Leave me a comment about your all-time favorite pair of sunglasses.  I still remember my Vuarnet shades from high school.  Matched up with some nice acid-washed jeans and maybe a popped collar.  So money ... and I didn’t even know it.

Gotta Get 'Girlie'

Dawn, from Racing Dawn, hit me with a ‘girlie blog award’ (her words, not mine), which calls for a list of my ten favorite things.

Embracing my inner girlieness, I figured I’d give it a shot. Here’s the top ten, in no particular order:

Sunrises while running or fishing – Running and fishing are two activities that I very much enjoy, but my experience shows that it’s challenging and often painful to try and combine the two. Once I’ve chosen between the two, there’s something about starting a run or wetting a line while it’s still dark out, and watching the day begin while doing something I enjoy can carry me through the whole day. Makes me feel like I’ve squeezed a little extra out of the day.

Completing a home-improvement project – I’ve always enjoyed and been fairly adept at woodworking and general home-improvement. As my life has progressed and time to work on these projects has become harder to come by, I’ve found I draw more enjoyment from completing a project than actually doing the work. I don’t necessarily view this shift as a bad thing, but more of a healthy understanding of the reality of my life right now.

Chocolate-covered pretzels – Crazy good. Evil good. Not a huge fan of sweets, but a big fan of salty things, and when these two come together it leaves me powerless. My willpower kryptonite. Rivaled only by Bryer’s mint chocolate chip ice cream.

The color green – I assume this is tied to my general love of the outdoors, landscaping, etc. There was a point in time where almost every item of clothing I owned was some shade of green. Made for some rather unfortunate combinations I’m sure. Thankfully my wife is around to make it appear I have some sense of fashion.

Random acts of kindness – Amazing the power that the smallest act can have if it’s completely unexpected.

Good, sincere customer service – Sadly, a nearly lost art. However, it’s become rare enough that when you get truly good service it stands out like a lighthouse in a storm. There are several companies that I continue to use almost entirely due to positive experiences dealing with their employees. I wish more companies recognized the return they get on simple, positive actions from the folks that work for them.

A cold Guinness on a hot day – I generally don’t drink much these days, especially if I’m in a marathon training cycle, but I’m a sucker for an icy Stout at the end of a hot day. The perfect punctuation for a busy, and hopefully productive day. There are stouts I like better than Guiness, but Guiness is my best bang-for-the-buck option, and is the beer that really turned me on to stouts many years ago.

Cool rain on a hot summer day – Always a winner for me, unless said rain decides to violate the inner working of my iPod leaving the screen a dark, unbacklit field of sadness.

Unsolicited hugs from my family, especially my little girl – Fortunately my daughter is a big-time hugger. She is singlehandedly trying to ensure that the East Coast continues to meet its daily quota of hugs. I used to refer to her as the koala, like those clip on koalas that were everywhere when I was a kid. Whatever happened to those things?

My Garmin (most of the time) – Still, pound-for-pound, the best gift I have ever been given by my wife. For a numbers junkie like me, this is like a wrist-mounted crack pipe. I can’t get enough of checking this thing while I run, after I run, before I run, etc., etc. If loving Lil’ G is wrong, then I don’t want to be right.

Don’t forget to enter my $45 CSN Stores Giveaway.

Now, back to my regularly scheduled manliness.

I’m on a horse.

$45 CSN Stores Giveaway!!

Looks like it’s time for me to host my first giveaway. All the cool kids are doing it. As someone who does nearly all my shopping online, this seemed like the perfect place to start – CSN Stores.

Many of you are probably already aware of CSN Stores from other blog reviews and/or giveaways. I’ve certainly entered my share of CSN giveaways, and have discovered that my virtual luck is about as good as my real-world luck. Since I can’t enter my own giveaway, I also can’t not be selected. That’s right – I’m busting out the double negatives to make myself feel better.

CSN Stores offer just about anything and everything you could possibly want at amazing prices. Yes, they have products for runners and triathletes, but that’s just scratching the surface of what they offer. Maybe you need some Corelle dinnerware to create some tasty running ‘fuel’? CSN Stores has you covered. Maybe you need a ‘4-Cycle Medium Weight Stomper with Diaphragm Carburetor and Optional Accessories’ to build your own running track around your house and make your neighbors love you forever. CSN stores has it. If you know what you want they probably have it, and if you don’t you can spend countless hours browsing their wares. Good stuff at good prices – hard to beat.

How does a $45 gift certificate sound to help you get your shop on? That’s what’s up for grabs for one lucky winner. Here are the 5 different ways you can enter (leave a separate comment for each to serve as a virtual ‘entry’):

1.  Become a follower of my blog or let me know you’re already a follower. (1 Entry)

2.  Browse the CSN Stores site and let me know what you’d like to get with your winnings. (1 Entry)

3.  Post about this giveaway on your blog and leave me a link to it. (1 Entry)

4.  Tweet about this giveaway. (1 Entry)

5.  ‘Like’ CSN Stores on Facebook (1 Entry)

I'll leave the giveaway open for entries for a week, ending at midnight on September 15th. I’ll post the winner, chosen at random using random.org, on the 16th. The winner's email will be sent to my CSN contact and she’ll contact you directly with the coupon code. This giveaway is open to US and Canada readers. Good luck!

Marathon 2 - Electric Boogaloo

Finally got off my electronic rear-end and clicked the register button, so now it’s official. I’d circle it on my calendar if I weren’t such a computer-dependent tool and had some sort of physical representation of time that lived outside my laptop.

Sunday, November 14th – Kitty Hawk, NC – The Outer Banks Marathon

I’m working through injuries now, and have no doubt that my body will entertain me with new and exciting ailments between now and then, but I needed to make this official so I have a singular point on the horizon to aim for.

‘Why the Outer Banks Marathon?’ you didn’t ask, but no doubt we wondering. Nags Head and the Outer Banks hold a special place in my heart and many of my best memories. My family first went to Nags Head for a summer vacation in 1980 and we loved it there. It was a lot different back in those days, but underneath all the changes and growth, the basic charm of the area is still there.

We kept going back every summer for several more years, and after about the 5th summer my parents started talking about retiring there. My sister and I had heard that before, so we didn’t give it much consideration, but in the mid 90s, after having gone every summer since 1980, my folks bought some land in Kitty Hawk and started working on house plans. In 1998 they both retired from the working world, and moved into their Kitty Hawk house. We still go every summer to visit, and now my kids have the Outer Banks as part of their summer memories. This summer when we go visit for the 4th of July will mark the 30th straight summer I’ve visited the beaches of OBX.

The starting line for the marathon is about 1.5 miles from their house, and their little street even shows up on the race map, which I think is really cool. What makes this even better is when I told my folks I was going to do this, my dad signed up to walk the half, which starts at the same time as the full, but goes from the midway point so that the half and full end in the same place. I’ve helped him look up a training plan online, and he’s already building up his walking base, so we’ll be trading training war stories throughout the Summer. I consider my dad one of my best friends, and to my wife’s dismay we are INCREDIBLY similar, and if all goes well we should be crossing the finish line around the same time.

Now that they’ve got my money, it’s time to get serious about planning and training. Looking forward to sharing my trials and tribulations for my second run at 26.2.

Totally 80's .... Totally Hungover

(My lovely wife in the lovely blue jumpsuit)

“Nothing good ever happens after 1AM”. So goes the conventional wisdom when stories come out about athletes getting in fights at bars, celebrities doing faceplants on the pavement in front of the paparazzi, and 40ish folks reliving their 80’s glory and getting creative with drink combinations after the DJ has packed up and the alcohol is in full effect.

My wife’s 40th birthday party this past Saturday night was a huge success. Everyone really embraced the 80s theme, which made for some great outfits and a lively night of dancing to some great 80’s music. There were Madonnas a-plenty, everyone’s favorite groundskeeper Carl Spangler, plenty of preppies, and yours-truly went AWOL from Top Gun training for a bit to bring Maverick to the party.

My wife was pretty specific with what she wanted at the party, so it definitely wasn’t a surprise, so I figured I had to come up with some way to surprise her. I’m a man of few words, and not prone to drawing attention to myself in social situations, so I figured singing to my wife in front of all the guests would catch her offguard. Mission accomplished. Fortunately/unfortunately it was all caught on video …

I had resolved that I would keep my drinking at a respectably low level to maintain a slight buzz for the evening, which I succeeded at until around 1:30AM when the DJ had to leave, and we broke out the iPods and started playing our own music. The drinks for the evening consisted of a keg of Pale Ale from a local brewery (which was WAY too good), pitchers of a mixed-drink called a Sweet Tart which was chosen because it had Midori in it so it was a nice neon green which matched the neon-heavy 80’s theme, and jello shots made with 4 different neon-ish colors/flavors of jello. Lots of folks brought bottles of wine for gifts, and one neighbor, as part of a running joke, brought a bottle of Jagermeister. We also tried to come up with various 80’s stuff to have around the house, including neon jelly bracelets, Rubik’s cubes, and Pop Rocks.

Around 2AM, with the party still going strong, suddenly the Jagermeister appears. The last of the jello shots get gathered up as well, and of course the Pop Rocks come front and center. At this point various combinations of these three are tried by many, unfortunately including myself, with varying results. It seemed like a good idea at the time, but I can assure you that a jello shot with Pop Rocks sprinkled on top, with a healthy dose of Jager to activate the Rocks does not make for a very tasty shooter. That’s not to say that several rounds weren’t consumed, I just wouldn’t recommend it.

We finally got to bed sometime between 3AM and 4AM, and Sunday was a foggy haze of cleaning up and taking naps. The only worthwhile activity I accomplished Sunday was my stretching therapy, but I checked my workout log and realized that since I got cleared to start running again I had alternated running days and lifting days for 18 straight days, so it was probably good to give my body a rest. At least that’s what I used to convince myself, and pay no attention to the liver abuse that prompted the rest day.

All in all a great party, and my wife had a wonderful time, which made it all worthwhile. Her actual birthday is today, and for a present I got her a new setting for her wedding ring, which she got a few days early and grins every time she looks at it, which is really fun to watch.

One final photo – we setup a camera in the living room for folks to take pictures of themselves in their 80’s attire. I needed to get the camera and flash adjusted so it was just a point-and-click exercise, so I needed a test subject, and my camera-seeking-missile of a daughter was only too happy to fill the role. Here’s one of many shots. She’s only 8, so I see lots of ulcers in this dad’s future.

A couple of good giveaways to link to today, since after the party and the ring I'm a big fan of anything free:
